After a drive through the scorching heat and the stinging Indiana sun, down a long road in the desolate country we found a place to pull off. The paved road jutted from the that led into a large roundabout which was quite an weird coincidence in the middle of no where, roads leading no where. Like some kind cosmic joke, I could not help but think how phallic this must look from the sky. It probably looks as though someone paved a crop circle. More or less that is what this road was. Both sides surrounded by a few feet of grass then fields, a big paved phallus in the middle of a field, in the middle of nowhere.
Once we reached the round about I was quite confused. “Where did the road go?” I asked the girl. We came to a stop; she looked at me as though I had made an inappropriate statement. Then it hit me, not the direction in which the road was going, but something with a steel grip on a man’s heart. I dropped the car into drive, the car had it’s ticks so drive read as neutral on the dashboard. Once in drive, I peeled out without warning, pulling the steering wheel into a hard turn leading us into a mechanized cyclone at 30 miles per hour. At the startling jolt of the car her head flew forward before she could stable herself.
After recoiling herself she grabbed my hands “ WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING!” she yelled. At this point my head was in the clouds, high on adrenaline and the satisfaction of knowing how exactly to do a donut. My mind detracted to a comment made to me earlier that week. A man handing out bibles and I exchanged a few ideas. He ask me “Did anyone ever teach you to lie to your mother.” I replied “No, but did anyone teach me how to be nice to my mother?” I knew I had trumped him.
The trance I was in now was first hand experience that said I was right. Did anyone teach me to learn how to do a donut in a car, no? I was commanded by teenage angst and a life rose in confides of illusionary order. It’s dangerous to raise people on that. They will end up just driving like mad men, not just I cars but also in other aspects of life.
Here I was in the middle of nowhere in the scorching Indiana sun, on a Sunday afternoon with the most beautiful girl I have ever laid eyes on and I am thinking about a man who wants me to take a bible because I am a sinner.
This is the day I realized the Devil had won.
